Have you ever scrolled through social media Tiktok, Instagram, Snapchat and caught yourself comparing your life to someone else’s? The shopping hauls, luxury dining, perfect relationships, and the pressure of how we should look, act, and feel about ourselves.
The rise of social media and unrealistic standards continue to shape how many girls see themselves. We try to keep up with trends while admiring curated, “perfect” lives online. It’s something a lot of us experience, and it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Comparing ourselves to others can be natural and even helpful, but only when it’s done in a healthy, non-destructive way.
And the impact is real. A 2023 survey by the Cybersmile Foundation found that 9 out of 10 girls aged 16-24 feel negatively and dissatisfied with themselves due to social comparison online.
With that in mind, here are some ways to navigate social media while protecting our mental well-being:
1. Awareness: Recognize harmful comparison
Take control of your browsing. Start noticing when negative thoughts begin to show up while you’re scrolling (jealousy, insecurity or sadness). Set screen time limits, take breaks, and unfollow accounts that trigger those feelings.
2. Do a Reality Check: Understand what you’re consuming
Remember that social media shows highlights, not full lives. Behind every “perfect” post are filters, angles, editing, or even hours of preparation. Don’t compare your real life to someone else’s curated version of themselves.
3. Self-Value: Focus on mindfulness and building personal confidence
Focus on things that make you feel good offline, your hobbies, your friendships, your goals. Practice positive self-talk. The way you speak to yourself matters more than you think. Instead of comparing yourself to others online, focus on what makes you unique.
“We are each gifted in a unique and important way. It is our privilege and our adventure to discover our own special light.” – Evelyn Mary Dunbar, British artist
